How the town of Slaný arose...

When the Czechs had come to their new home, they found fertile ground, forrests rich in game and water full of fish there. Later on they also discovered mineral resources such as gold, silver, lead and tin. This rich land missed only one important thing - salt. They had to buy it from foreign traders.

After the Prince Przemysl´s successor - his son Nezamysl- had come to the throne, a very strange thing happend. Nezamysl´s friend Holot loved hunting in woods surrounding Prague. One day he and his retinue went hunting somewhat further away from Prague to the northwest. It was a nice sunny day and the forrest was beautiful. As they were riding around, they got thirsty.

´Try to find some water, I am very thirsty, I would like to drink´, said Holot. They found a creek but could not find a clear stream.

´I can see a hill, a stream might be there´, said one of the retinue and so they set out on a journey to that hill. And really - they found a spring of crystal clear water flowing out the hillside.

They dismounted from their horses and had a drink. But what happened? The water tastes very strange. It is salty!!! Very salty! They were happy. Such a rareness! Our country has everything now, even the salty water...

The following day Holot told everything to the Duke Nezamysl. The Duke was delighted and sent his servants to bring him water from this spring. Actually it was very salty. They tried to evaporate the water and salt remained at the vessel bottom.

Holot gathered some people who settled in the neighbourhood of the spring and started to gain salt. Thay were called ´slanci´or ´solnaři´. After a short time the neighbouring aggressive clan called Lučané learnt about that precious find and they atacked the ´salt makers´ for several times, burnt out their homes and stole the salt.

After one defeat Lučané came back and took control over the settlement. But suddenly the salt in the spring started to disappear. Bad times began. The country suffered from enormous drought, streams started to dry up and the salt spring diminished and the salt slowly disappeared...

Twelve years later Princess Kazi´s grandson Kosál discovered another salt spring near the town of Bílina. This spring contained much more salt than the diminshing spring in Slaný and the salt makers started to move towards Bílina. However this spring did not existed very long, the salt disappeared, too.

The settlement arisen at the salt spring was named Slaný and the hill bears the name the Slaný Hill...

That is how Václav Hájek from Libočany described that story and in his opinion the salt spring was discovered in the year 750. If you come to Slaný, go and look at it. You will find it in Nezamyslova street...
